Take extra care to lessen suffering of poor post note ban: Prez
New Delhi, Jan 5: Extra care must be taken to alleviate sufferings of the poor triggered by economic slowdown which has become unavoidable post demonetisation, President Pranab Mukherjee said today.
Demonetisation, while immobilising black money and fighting corruption, may lead
to "temporary slowdown" of the economy, the President said addressing the Governors

"We all will have to be extra careful to alleviate the suffering of the poor which might become unavoidable for the expected progress in the long term," Mukherjee said.
He said that while he appreciates the thrust on transition from entitlement approach to an entrepreneurial one for poverty alleviation, he is not too sure that the "poor can wait that long".
"They need to get succour here and now so that they can also participate actively in the national march toward a future devoid of hunger, unemployment and exploitation," the President said. .
Mukherjee said the recent package announced by the Prime Minister will provide some relief.
There will be elections in as many as seven states this year and the dates for elections in five of them have already been announced, the President said.
"The conduct of free and fair elections has made our democracy one of the most vibrant in the world. Elections reflect the attitudes, values and beliefs of the people towards their political environment," he said.
Cautioning about competitive populism, electoral rhetoric and vote bank politics
during elections, Mukherjee said noisy debates can "deepen the fault-
"Goodwill must prevail between different communities. At times, harmony may be put to test by vested interests. Communal tensions may rear their ugly head. Rule of law must form the sole basis of dealing with any such challenging situation," the President said.
He said the Governors and Lt Governors command respect and attention of the people of their state and they can play a role in easing tensions in the society.
"Through your interaction and wise counsel, you can play an important role in easing the tensions in the society," he said in his address.
He said, "In a pluralistic democracy like ours, tolerance, respect for contrary views and patience are a must which have to be preserved.
"India's strength lies in her diversity. The multiplicity in culture, faith and language is what makes India special.
There will always be divergent strands in public discourse. We may argue. We may disagree. But we cannot deny the prevalence of multiplicity of opinion," Mukherjee said.
The President asked Governors and Lt Governors to inculcate among the citizens of their states this fundamental ethos of the civilisation. .
Mukherjee said the year gone was a year of mixed fortunes.
"It began on a very promising note with the economy performing well, overcoming the weak global economic trends.

PPA ridicules Govt decision to convert CM bungalow into Guest House
ITANAGAR, Jan 5: Irked with the state Cabinet decision to convert Chief Minister's Bungalow as State Guest House, People' Party of Arunachal (PPA) on Thursday strongly opposed the move. Lashing out at Pema Khandu government, PPA President Kahfa Bengia termed the decision as whimsical. In a statement Bengia said, "Such a decision cannot be taken whimsically without taking the people of the state into confidence".
"Before taking such a major decision, Chief Minister Pema Khandu must make 60 pages (Mere Vichar) written documents left behind by late Kalikho Pul public," he rued. He further questioned why state Chief Minister Bungalow should be declared as State Guest House purely out of superstitious fear. PPA further threatened to launch series of agitation in the state followed by Delhi Chalo agitation.
AAPSU serves 30 days ultimatum to GoAP
ITANAGAR, Jan 5: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) has expressed its unhappiness over the non responsive attitude of the state government on its charter of demands and resolved to serve another reminder to the state government for its redressal at the earliest. Union has served 30 days ultimatum to the state government to fulfil its demand.

state government for one time relaxation to recruit Science and Mathematics teachers
at the ratio of 50:50. Stating that decision of the government will pose threat to
the existing ratio of 80:20 in recruitment, AAPSU was of the opinion that any decision
that can have long-
"AAPSU will constitute a fact finding committee to gather firsthand knowledge about the total number of qualified candidates from indigenous students in the said subjects and then apprise the government about its stand later on," the AAPSU release said. AAPSU also called for immediate appointment of regular DDSEs, Principal, Vice Principal and Headmaster and doing away with the stop gap arrangement.
The apex students' body of the state also said that the union was shocked to learn about zero placement of fund for textbook procurement.
"It is disheartening to learn that Rs 25 crore is the total budget needed for textbook procurement for the entire state but not a single Rupee has been released so far which is not a healthy sign. The state leadership that talk about revamping the education sector should seriously ponder upon this,", AAPSU said and demanded the state government to release fund for textbook procurement and appoint regular DDSEs, Principal, Vice Principal and Headmaster within 30 days, failing which the union said, it will be compelled to take its own course of action.

Teaching faculty cries for salary
ITANAGAR, Jan 5: Claiming that teachers working under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan(RMSA) are working without payment since past five months, Arunachal Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan Teachers' Association on Thursday appealed the Education Minister to ensure immediate release of pending salary.
In a letter to the Education Minister, the association informed that based on assurance given by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in October 2016 last, all pending salary of SSA teachers were released, however, the salaries of teachers working under RMSA are yet to be released. The association stated that Chief Minister Khandu had announced Rs.53 crore for teachers' salary in October 2016, however RMSA teachers are yet to be paid.
RMSA teachers also drew the Minister's attention towards disparity in the salary for teacher working under RMSA.

Ven. U Nanda Mahathera expired at the age of 69 years and originally belonged to Balipathar in Karbi Anglong district of Assam. He was first ordained at the age of 20 years and the next 49 years (Ran Retreats) of his life was spent in monkhood. He spent 44 years in Bodh Gaya before returning to Kaliyani in Assam. He was on a visit to MLBC when he breathed his last.
Ven. Gyanatisa Mahathera originally belonged to Pahukutia village, Titabar, Assam. He entered monastic life in spiritual pursuit. He was ordained in 1988 at Emphum village now in Namsai district and remained a monk for 28 Varshavarsh (Rain Retreats). He was 87 years old.
The public leaders as well as the organising committee headed by Ven. Panyaloka Mahathera and Chowja Maio as the President and General Secretary have made sure for the success of the festival. Many devotees are arriving from far and wide to pay their last venerations to the departed monks.
The first day of the fest concluded with illumination and cultural night. The festival ground spread on a vast plot of land is dotted with food stalls and outlets selling different kind of wares and toys. The bustling in the market area has been witnessed for the whole day.
JFA expresses shock over Bihar scribe's murder
GUWAHATI, Jan 5: Journalists' Forum Assam (JFA) expressed shock at the murder of a Bihar based journalist and the mysterious death of a Jharkhand based scribe within 24 hours.
The Assam based media rights body reiterated its old demand for a national action plan to safeguard the media persons and ensure justice to the victims.
Local media reports confirm that a working journalist Brajesh Kumar Singh, 28 was shot dead at Salakhni village under Samastipur district of north Bihar on January 3 evening by some unidentified goons.
Brajesh, who received serious injuries on his head, died on the spot.
Earlier, on January 2, another young journalist of Hazaribag in Jharkhand Hari Prakash, 31 was found dead at a field near Kud village. Hari, also a law graduate, used to work for a Hindi daily and he was untraced for three days.
According to his father Jitan Mahato, Hari was missing since 30 December and he never returned home.
Mahato, in a FIR to the police, claimed that his son was abducted and murdered by Hari's known friends.
"It is very surprising that Bihar has slowly turned into a killing ground for journalists. The state has lost three scribes to assailants in the last nine months. Last year Bihar lost two journalists namely Rajdeo Ranjan (13 May) and Dharmendra Kumar Singh (12 November) to perpetrators," said a statement issued by JFA president Rupam Barua.
The JFA also urged Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to come clean with adequate plans for security and justice to the families of journo victims. It also requested the government to adequately compensate the families of murdered scribes.
Police officer's house gutted

RUKSIN, Jan 5: The house of one Dapi Tapok was gutted and all household properties, including important documents, precious beads, were burnt to ashes in a devastating fire at Niglok village under Ruksin police station last midnight.
An electric short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire. According to eye witness, the fire broke out at around 12.30 pm and engulfed the SPT building and adjoining semi SPT kitchen, wood store and burnt down all properties before fire tender could arrive from Pasighat, which is about 44 km from Niglok.
The family members of Tapok were asleep when the fire broke out.
House owner Tapok, who is the Second Officer of APPBn Border Out Post (BOP) at Debing was not at home at the time of incident.
The victims claims that properties worth over Rs. 15 lakhs were lost in the fire. However, the actual properties lost or damaged could be ascertained only after assessment.
Meanwhile, police from Ruksin PS and Ruksin Additional Deputy Commissioner, T Pada have inspected the spot and took stock of the situation.
The local MLA also visited the spot and assured of proper relief and rehabilitation as per norms.
The village Kebang of Niglok has donated some amounts to the victim family as immediate relief. Niglok Anchal Somiti Member Tojo Eshi has appealed to all sections of people to extend a helping hand to the fire victims.

Review meeting held for Parashuram Kund Mela
ITANAGAR, Jan 5: Taking cognizance of the upcoming Parashuram Kund Mela on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Lohit Danish Ashraf convened a review meeting at Parashuram Kund on Thursday to take stock of the developmental works done by various departments.
The DC inspected the bathing points, police control room and other existing infrastructures. Ashraf instructed the representatives of all the departments for speedy repair of dilapidated structures. He specially instructed the PHED department to complete the pending works in time. Later, he visited the holy spot along with the SDO Tezu, EAC Wakro, EAC incharge Lekang, DSP Lohit and CO Tezu.
Ashraf said that thousands of devotees come each year to take the holy dip and it becomes imperative to provide provisions for fooding and lodging to conduct the Mela in a smooth manner. He also instructed the administrators posted at Dirak and Sunpura check gates to make arrangements for easy submission and retrieval of temporary inner line permits. He reckoned that if these measures were implemented properly it would not only generate a good amount of revenue for the government but also boost tourism in Lohit district.

Avoid violence
The West Bengal politics is taking an ugly turn. For decades violence has marred the intense political rivalry between TMC and Left Parties. Even as people thought that political violence is finally over, again it is cropping up. The headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Kolkata was attacked on Tuesday shortly after the arrest of TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay. Stones were pelted at the office headquarters, after which the protesters were chased out and the area was cordoned off by the police. Union Minister and BJP MP Babul Supriyo alleged that his house too was attacked by TMC workers.
BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress of doing negative politics and resorting to violence when its leaders are caught in corruption cases. It said TMC government in West Bengal keeps silent on corruption cases of party leaders and workers and if Centre proceeds against them as per law then it makes hue and cry. On their part TMC has denied any involvement in the violence and instead alleged that BJP is carrying out vendetta politics against the party. Both the parties should avoid violence at any cost. It does not help anyone and only vitiates the atmosphere. The centre should also avoid using state machineries like CBI to target the political opponents. There is need for both TMC and BJP to calm down their respective cadres. Political battle should be fought politically and not violently.

Treat everyone equally
Dear Editor,
Public places and institutions shouldn't not be named after the individuals especially that of politicians. Influential class or commoner, all have ultimately same contribution and value as citizen of the country. It is not justified for certain class to put their personalized names into public assets as a way of commemoration, and it rather sounds pompous, ludicrous, insane and absurd.
A VIP or influential class takes amass biggest share from common resources as salary, perks, etc for doing public work and he doesn't do a charity to get special recognition for the public institutions to be named after them.
On the other hand, commoner like farming class also do yeoman contribution to the society by feeding the people out of their hard work. So, the ultimate societal contribution is equal.
Public institutions should be named after name of the particular place. Stop naming public institutions after name of individuals because it's unjustified and ludicrous.
